about

The Maladaptive Strategies release series aims to fill in the gaps in the Bit Shifter project's evolutionary tree. A retrospective collection, this series compiles tracks that were produced alongside the standalone albums and EP, but whose paths diverged — some casually thrown onto a homepage, some seeing formal release on various far-flung compilations, and some that circumstance simply selected against.

This material has been grouped together into volumes organized loosely by chronology and character. Taken together, the Maladaptive Strategies series collects and presents 22 years’ worth of auxiliary Game Boy malfeasance.

This installment, Volume 2, primarily presents works created during the period of 2003 to 2007, though in some cases released later.

__________

The recordings in this release series have been remastered from a patchwork collection of source files, and substitutes thereof, spanning a wide range of sound quality — from mastering-ready unprocessed DAW output, to poorly mic-ed live audio captured from a choppy low-bandwidth internet stream. Due to the disparate nature of the source material, some variation in character between tracks may be experienced.

about

Bit Shifter Brooklyn, New York

Since 2001, NYC's Bit Shifter has been among those leading the charge in the underground movement known as chipstyle music, exploring high-impact, low-res music made using primitive synthesis as a deliberate aesthetic choice. Armed only with two 30-year-old handhelds, Bit Shifter leaves high-end computer music choking on his exhaust, bringing twice the rock with 0.002% of the processing power. ... more
